Car Has No Service History?
Before you walk away or haggle, check whether the manufacturer holds main dealer records for it
"No history" doesn't always mean no records
Sellers often don't know that main dealer services are logged on the manufacturer's system against the VIN - especially if the paper book went missing, or the car is a UK import that arrived without its paperwork. Check with the Irish reg or VIN before you decide.
The Real Risk of No Service History
Value Impact
Lower
Missing history usually means a lower price - which cuts both ways, now and when you sell.
Future Resale
Harder
When you sell, you'll face the same problem. No history means more questions and lower offers.
But Wait...
Check first
Some "no history" cars do have main dealer records on file. Find out before negotiating.
Step 1: Check for Hidden Digital Records
Before Walking Away, Run This Check
Takes 3 minutes • Could save the deal
Why sellers don't know about digital records:
- • Previous owner threw away the service book
- • Imported from the UK without its paperwork
- • Bought at auction or taken in as a trade-in without paperwork
- • Don't realise many manufacturers now keep service records digitally
What you need:
- Option 1: The car's Irish registration - it's on the plates (e.g. 191-D-12345, or 08-C-1234 on older cars)
- Option 2: The 17-character VIN from the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC, the "logbook") or the base of the windscreen
If records ARE found:
You've uncovered evidence the seller couldn't show you. You can pay a fair price with more confidence, or use any gaps in the record as a negotiating point.
If NO records are found:
We refund you in full automatically - and you know where you stand before you make an offer.
Time: 3 minutes
Cost: €14.99
Coverage: 39 brands since 2012
Step 2: If No Records Found - Evaluate the Risk
Pre-2012 Cars
Lower concernDigital service records weren't standard before 2012. It's normal for older cars to have no retrievable digital history. Focus on physical condition, garage invoices, and the NCT certificates.
Independent Garage Servicing
Lower concernIf the car was serviced at independent garages rather than main dealers, records won't be in manufacturer databases. This doesn't mean it wasn't maintained - ask the seller for the garage invoices instead.
UK Imports
Check the paperworkFor a UK import on Irish plates, the report shows the records the manufacturer holds against the VIN. Ask for any invoices from the car's UK years and compare them. Remember the odometer will usually read in miles, not km.
Genuine Lack of Maintenance
Higher concernIf the car is 2015 or newer, the seller says it was dealer-serviced, and no digital records exist, that's a red flag. Either the car wasn't actually serviced at main dealers, or it hasn't been maintained at all. Proceed with caution.
Step 3: Negotiation Guide (If Truly No History)
What to Factor Into Your Offer
| Catch-up servicing | Get a quote for a full service and any overdue items | Deduct it |
| Premium/luxury car | Main dealer servicing costs more - so does skipping it | Bigger gap |
| High-km vehicle | More wear and more unknowns | Negotiate harder |

Common Questions
Is it safe to buy a car with no service history?
It's riskier than buying with full history, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. First, check whether the manufacturer holds main dealer records for the car - sellers don't always know they exist. If there's genuinely no history, factor in the maintenance risk and lower resale value, look at the NCT certificates, and consider an independent pre-purchase inspection.
How much should I knock off for no service history?
There's no fixed figure. Get a quote for a full service plus any work that may be overdue (such as a timing belt, where fitted), and remember you'll face the same questions when you come to sell. The car's age, km and condition all matter. Without service history you're taking on unknown maintenance risk, and the price should reflect that.
Does the NCT count as service history?
No. The NCT is a roadworthiness test, not a service. A car has its first NCT at 4 years old, then every 2 years, and every year from 10 years old. NCT certificates won't show whether the oil or timing belt was changed, but they do help corroborate a car's upkeep and odometer readings, so they're well worth asking for.
Can I still insure and tax a car with no service history?
Yes. Insurers don't typically ask for service history - your premium depends on the car, your driving record and other factors. Motor tax doesn't depend on service history either. The lack of history is more likely to affect resale value when you sell.
Will no service history affect my warranty?
It depends on the warranty type. Manufacturer warranties typically require proof of regular servicing to remain valid. Extended warranties and dealer warranties vary - check the terms carefully. If buying from a dealer, clarify warranty coverage given the lack of history.
