The Evolution of Service Records
From Paper to Digital
For decades, Irish car owners relied on paper service books to track their car's maintenance history. These booklets, stamped by the garage after each service, became the standard way to prove a car had been properly maintained. But paper records had real limitations: they could be lost, damaged, forged, or simply forgotten in the glovebox when a car changed hands.
How Manufacturer Databases Work
Since around 2012, most major manufacturers have kept digital records of the services performed at their authorised dealerships. When you take your car to a main dealer, they log the service against your car's unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the manufacturer's system. That record isn't something the owner or seller can edit, which is why it's such useful evidence when a car is being bought or sold.
Why Digital Is Becoming Standard
Many manufacturers have moved from stamped paper books to digital service records, and some no longer issue a paper service book with a new car at all. For Irish buyers, that means a car advertised with "full service history" may have no book to show you - the history sits on the manufacturer's system instead. Sellers can prove their car's history without the paper book, and buyers can check it for themselves.
Digital Records, the NCT and Imports
The NCT is a roadworthiness test, not a service: a car has its first NCT at 4 years old, then every 2 years, and every year from 10 years old. NCT certificates won't show whether the car was serviced, but they do help corroborate its upkeep and odometer readings - so compare them with the readings in the digital service record. For a UK import that has paid VRT and taken an Irish reg, search by the new reg or the VIN; the report shows the records the manufacturer holds against that VIN, and readings from the car's UK years will usually be in miles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a digital service book?
Many manufacturers have moved away from stamped paper service books. Instead, the main dealer logs each service against the car's VIN on the manufacturer's own system, and that record is the car's digital service book. ServiceStamp retrieves those records by Irish registration or VIN and presents them as a report you can keep and share.
How is a digital service book different from a paper service book?
A digital service record is held by the manufacturer, not in the glovebox, so it can't be lost when the car changes hands or stamped by someone who never touched the car. It typically includes service descriptions and the odometer reading at each visit, and you can look it up from anywhere. Paper books often only contain a stamp and a date.
Can I show the report to a buyer or dealer in Ireland?
Yes. The report lists the service records the manufacturer holds against the VIN - dates, odometer readings and the servicing dealer - so a private buyer, or a dealer valuing a trade-in, can see the history for themselves. It sits well alongside the car's NCT certificate and Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC).
Can I get a digital service book for any car?
ServiceStamp covers 39 car brands for vehicles from model year 2012 onwards, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, Toyota, Škoda and many more. You can search by Irish registration or VIN. The services must have been carried out at official manufacturer dealerships to appear.
My car is a UK import. Will its digital records show?
Search using the Irish registration it was given after VRT, or its 17-character VIN. The report shows the service records the manufacturer holds against that VIN. UK imports usually read in miles rather than km, so check which unit each odometer reading uses, and ask the seller for any paperwork from the car's UK years.
Does the digital service book show independent garage services?
No, ServiceStamp specifically retrieves official manufacturer dealership service records from OE databases. Services performed at independent garages, or DIY servicing, are not recorded in manufacturer systems, so those records won't appear in the digital service book.
How quickly will I receive my digital service book?
Your digital service book is generated instantly after payment. You'll receive immediate access to your complete service history report, which you can view online, download, or share with potential buyers.
