Lost Your Service History?
It happens - the book goes missing in a house move, or the previous owner never handed it over.
Good news: the main dealer records may still exist
For cars from model year 2012 onwards that were serviced at a main dealer, the manufacturer usually holds a digital record against the VIN - even if you've lost every bit of paperwork. Look it up with your Irish registration or VIN.
Why This Matters
Resale Value
Lower offers
Irish buyers expect a car's servicing to be documented. Without records, expect more questions and lower offers.
Selling Time
Slower sale
A car without proof of servicing can take longer to sell, whether privately or as a trade-in.
Buyer Trust
Less proof
Without a service record, buyers have only your word and the NCT certificate to go on - and the NCT isn't a service.

Common Ways Service History Gets Lost
📦 House Moves
Service books thrown away during a clear-out or lost in moving boxes.
🗑️ Accidental Disposal
Mistaken for old paperwork and binned, or left in the glovebox and forgotten when the car was sold.
🚗 Previous Owner Never Gave It
Bought privately or from a dealer who didn't hand over the service book with the car and its VRC.
🚢 Imported Without Paperwork
UK imports are a big share of used cars in Ireland. The service book doesn't always make it through the sale, VRT and Irish registration.
🏢 Dealer Closed or Changed Hands
The main dealer that serviced the car has since closed. The records sit with the manufacturer, not the dealer, so they can still be retrieved.
💧 Damage or Theft
Water damage from a leak, theft in a car break-in, or simply deteriorated with age.
How to Recover Lost Service History
1. Check Digital Manufacturer Records
✅ Best first step for 2012+ cars serviced at a main dealer
Why This Works:
Since around 2012, main dealers have logged services on the manufacturer's central system against the car's VIN. Even if the service book is long gone, the manufacturer still holds that record.
ServiceStamp retrieves:
- ✓ Every main dealer service date and odometer reading
- ✓ Work performed and parts used
- ✓ Dealership names and locations
- ✓ Complete maintenance timeline
Simple 3-step process:
- 1. Use your Irish registration (e.g. 191-D-12345 - easiest) or the 17-character VIN from your Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC)
- 2. Enter the registration or VIN on ServiceStamp
- 3. Receive your instant service history report
Time: 3 minutes
Cost: €14.99
Coverage: 39 brands
2. Contact Previous Garages
If your car was serviced at independent garages (not stored in manufacturer databases), contact them directly for duplicate invoices. For a UK import, ask the seller or importing dealer for any invoices from the car's UK years.
Time: Usually a few days • Cost: Often free, though some garages charge an admin fee
3. Gather Your NCT Certificates
The NCT isn't a service, but NCT certificates and pass history help corroborate a car's upkeep and odometer readings. A car has its first NCT at 4 years old, then every 2 years, and every year from 10 years old - so an older car can have a useful trail of them.
Tip: Keep the certificates with your service report so a buyer can see the km climbing steadily between tests and services.
What You're Likely to Find
| Vehicle | Serviced At | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 onwards | Main dealers | Records usually held by the manufacturer |
| UK import | Main dealers | Whatever the manufacturer holds against the VIN |
| Any year | Independent garages | Not in manufacturer systems - ask the garage |
| Pre-2012 | Any location | Limited digital coverage - rely on paperwork |
What If I Can't Recover Anything?
Worst case scenario: If you genuinely can't recover any service history, you'll need to:
Be honest and price realistically:
- • Set your asking price knowing buyers will factor in the missing history
- • Get a fresh service before selling (shows current care)
- • Keep all recent receipts and your NCT certificates
- • Be upfront about the history in your ad
- • Consider a trade-in instead of a private sale
Important: Always try digital recovery first - many owners assume the records are gone when the manufacturer still holds them. And if your ServiceStamp report finds zero manufacturer service records, we refund you in full automatically.
Common Questions
How long does recovery take?
Digital recovery via ServiceStamp: about 3 minutes. Contacting garages: usually a few days.
Is digital service history as good as a physical book?
In many ways, better. Digital records are held by the manufacturer, so they can't be lost or damaged, and they're harder to dispute than a stamp in a book. Many manufacturers have now moved from stamped paper books to digital service records.
What if I'm selling the car soon?
Run the check before you advertise. Share the ServiceStamp report with buyers, along with the current NCT certificate and the VRC, so they can see the car's history for themselves.
My car is a UK import. Can I recover its history?
Search by the Irish registration it was given after VRT, or its VIN. The report shows the service records the manufacturer holds against that VIN. For anything else, ask the seller or importer for paperwork from the car's UK years - and note that UK imports usually read in miles rather than km.
My car is pre-2012. Can I still recover history?
Possibly. Some premium brands (BMW, Mercedes, Porsche) hold earlier digital records. For older cars, focus on contacting the garages that serviced it and gathering the NCT certificates.
